Can I have stop signs installed to slow down traffic?
Question:

Can I have stop signs installed to slow down traffic?
Answer:

The City of Casselberry does not install stop signs for speed control for the following reasons:
  • Although stop signs slow most traffic down as they approach the intersection, vehicles tend to speed up between signs to make up for lost time.
  • Studies indicate that vehicles are more likely to not stop for these arbitrary signs.
  • Properly located stop signs tell drivers and pedestrians who has the right of way. Nationally accepted standard criteria for the installation of stop signs have been reiterated in state and local codes. These criteria, called "warrants" are based on the amount of traffic from each direction and the history of accidents at an intersection.
